STATEMENT BY H.E. TONY KRANH ACTING DIRECTOR OF THE OFFICE OF ADMINISTRATION
Following the meeting between Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and H.E Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, in Brunei on 10 October 2013, the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) has announced an additional contribution of US$1.8 Million as bridging funds to the national side of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) for 2013. The Prime Minister and the Secretary-General have also appealed to the international community to continue providing assistance for the ECCC, which has continued to work to achieve justice.
The RGC’s additional funding comes amid difficulties to pay staff on the national side of the ECCC, and is intended to ensure that the national side can perform their work without interruption until the end of 2013. During this time the Trial Chamber of the ECCC is hearing the closing statements in Case 002/01, with a verdict expected in the first half of 2014.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the RGC and all donor countries for their funding contributions to the court. These contributions are of vital the court to be able to successfully complete its mandate. On this occasion I would also reiterate my appeal to donor countries to come forward with additional contributions in order to enable the court to accomplish its mission, pursuing justice for the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime.
