ADHOC Safe Migration Public Forum

Public Forum in Siem Reap: On 22nd July 2011, ADHOC has organized a public forum in order to raise awareness at grassroots community level regarding the serious risks associated with labor migration and how to reduce these risks. Members of commune councils, representatives from Women’s Affairs Department and chiefs of the communes were invited as speakers of the forum, while ADHOC staff facilitated. Our staff distributed leaflets, posters and booklets on safe migration to participants.
During this forum, villagers raised many issues and questions associated with labor migration. Some of most concerning questions raised during the forum were: why did some migrant workers disappear after 2 year contracts were terminated? Who is responsible for their disappearance?
What ADHOC has acquired from this experience will pave the way for us to work harder in continuing to raise awareness among grassroots groups, community representatives, local authorities and Civil Society groups working on migration on how to reduce the risk of labor migration and refer the victims to proper services available for them, especially for women and children.
