River Communities Defend their Rights and Protest against a Mega Hydro-Electric Dam Project in Stung Treng Province

Early on 28 February 2012, communities living along two rivers affected by a mega hydro-electric dam project in Stung Treng province gathered to perform a religious ritual and peacefully protest against the project. The Lower Se​ San 2 Dam is planned to be built by Electricity of Vietnam on the Se San river. It will severely affect the livelihoods and lifestyle of communities living along the Se San and Srey Pork rivers, displace them from ancestral land, and flood thousands of hectares of forest and farmland.

ADHOC Provide Material Assistance to Flood Victims in remote area of Dang Kambeth Commune, Sandan District Kampong Thom Province

The poorest flood victims living in five villages in Dang Kambeth Commune, Sandan District, Kampong Thom Province (Prey Lang area), had material assistance distributed to them on 28th February 2012 by a team of ADHOC employees. The assistance was bought with donations from Cambodian people in Canada to provide food to the flood victims and the poorest families. A total of 334 families were reached by this donation.

Convicted Villager May Have Been the Victim of a Plot in a Case Involving Local Police Officers in Prey Veng Province

As the Prey Veng Provincial Court issued a judgment on 29 February 2012 in a case involving Chhorn Ny, a 47-year old villager, and local policemen, the Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC) is concerned about several issues regarding the case. Chhorn Ny was given a one-year suspended sentence and a one million riel fine for disorderly conduct and attempted assault on a police officer, but he may have been the victim of a plot.

Five Employees of JZR Taken Hostage for Two Hours after Company Began Illegally Clearing Tumpoun People’s Land in Rattanakiri Province

On 21 February, after a private company began bulldozing their farmland, 300 villagers from the Tumpoun minority ethnic group captured five company employees and held them hostage for two hours in Lumphat district, Rattanakiri province.
Jing Zhong Ri Cambodia Co. Ltd. (JZR) claims that it was granted a 70-year, 9,000-hectare concession in Lumphat district for a rubber plantation. According to information gathered by the Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC) however, the company has not signed any contract with the government. It has only been authorized to conduct an investment study.

Factory Workers Shot during a Protest for Higher Wages and Better Working Conditions

Three female factory workers were shot yesterday during a protest at Svay Rieng Special Economic Zone (SEZ). One is in a critical condition and has been transferred to Phnom Penh’s Calmette Hospital. […] At 7:30am yesterday, thousands of workers from three different factories (Kaoway, Sheico and Kingmaker) gathered to demand higher wages. They also demanded that the companies stop dismissing employees who decline to work on Sundays and public holidays. As company representatives refused to engage in dialogue, the demonstration turned into a riot.
